Studies indicate that massage therapy performed during pregnancy can reduce anxiety, decrease symptoms of depression, relieve muscle aches and joint pains, and improve labour outcomes and newborn health. Women can begin massage therapy at any point in their pregnancy – during the first, second, or third trimester.
Massage therapy can be incorporated into routine prenatal care as an emotional and physical health supplement proven to improve
pregnancy outcome, and maternal health. I can work with your family physician, ob/gyn or midwife.
As many women experience lower back pain during pregnancy that is often related to tight hamstring and gluteal muscles, you are encouraged to bring your partner to the massage so they can learn how to safely and effectively stretch these muscles with you.
Note that I perform pregnancy massage in the side-lying position as I believe this is the most effective position in the second and third trimesters. The position in the first trimester will be determined by how comfortable you are lying on your stomach and if you have any conditions or warnings from your OB or Midwife. After treating both sides, you are moved to a semi-reclined position facing up to complete the treatment.
